Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Locally grown food
One way people can reduce their carbon footprint is by buying food locally. Almost 11% of food-related greenhouse emissions are from transporting food from where it was grown to where it is sold. If people could shop locally and buy more fresh produce from local farmers, they would reduce their food carbon footprint. Another thing to consider when buying non-local food is often times food needs to be refrigerated when it is transported. The refrigeration of these foods adds a lot more carbon to the environment. Local food often times has less packaging as it doesn’t need to be shipped as far. So buying locally sourced food also helps reduce the amount of plastic and packaging used.

I agree with you and I would like to add that most of the things you said also apply to clothing. Most clothes are made in places like Bangladesh, India, China, and Vietnam and they have to be transported many miles, putting more CO2 into our atmosphere. Checking the labels on clothes before you buy them to see if they were made locally could make a huge difference. http://www.fibershed.com/
I agree as well, I feel that there could be a lot more thing we can grow and produce locally, which would help and benefit the environment tremendously. Buying locally grown food and locally produced things such as clothing could reduce the worlds CO2 emissions. Also if you buy from small local businesses you are also helping the community and business by giving jobs. Another way to buy local is the nearest farmers market, this is a great way to make sure you are reducing your carbon footprint as well as helping and contributing to the community.
