Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

People need to go places! How can we do this without emitting so much carbon??

Transportation is what is causing the most carbon output in almost all countries. Planes, cars and other vehicles emit so much more carbon than is necessary. Many of these countries are quite poor therefor can not afford fuel efficient vehicles which is one of the major problems. People need to care more about the environment! My Carbon footprint was much lower than I thought but my transportation took up the most, similar to everywhere else. Let's make our transportation mechanisms more fuel efficient!

I agree, countries should really start taking a look at their fuel efficiency for the cars that are in their country. I think cars should have a required mpg(miles per gallon) in order to be made. If countries do not want this, maybe they could convert to public transportation or carpooling. In my carbon footprint, my transportation took up about half of my total carbon footprint. It is defiantly the leading cause for rising CO2 emissions, and we should find ways to lessen it.

There are already inventions in the making which can help make cars clean energy. This way, the cars can be eco friendly, and we can pollute less. I think that there should be restrictions, which there already are, they just aren’t enough to lower the amount of pollution going into the air. The best way to tackle this problem is to raise the mpg limit. It may seem like a stretch because those cars are harder to make but people are also going to be spending less money on gasoline because of the higher mpg rate.

This is very important, several peoples carbon footprints are taken up mostly my transportation and could definitely be reduced if there wasn’t so much carbon produced while traveling by using transportation that emit a lot of carbon. There are many different ways people can reduce carbon when traveling. Like taking public transportation, trains, busses and ocean transportation. There are also cars that are not powered by gas which could make a very big difference if they were used more often instead of gas powered automobiles.

I definitely agree that we need to take a look at mpg in car production, although the current stance of our government is not helping with this at all. There should be regulated fuel efficiency requirements for car companies in the US, and every country. By consuming less fuel, driving would be cheaper, while reducing our carbon footprints.
