Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Sustainable City

510kicks

Many cities around the world try to become sustainable cities. It is not as simple as putting solar panels on our buildings or using electric cars. It starts with each and every person who lives in the area. For example, in Oakland, there are 420,000 people living here. For such a small city that is a huge population. Public transportation would be very effective in urban environments such as this one. In Oakland, we have AC Transit, BART, Ford bikes, and many more. If even a quarter of Oakland's total population started to take public transportation we would significantly reduce C02 emissions. Taking public transportation is the most effective way to help our city stay sustainable. Solar panels and electric cars help as well but if we didn't have to drive those electric cars it would keep greenhouse gas' being put into the air during the development of these "green" cars.

I agree that taking public transportation is probably the best way for cities and people to reduce CO2 emissions. We can also carpool, ride bikes, and drive hybrid cars. Also, did you know that the average vehicle creates "roughly 6 to 9 tons of CO2 each year." (c2es.org) This fact further proves the argument that taking public transportation is the best way to reduce CO2 emissions.

Taking public transit is an effective way of creating sustainable cities. If more people take public transit, there would be less carbon emissions due to less cars being driven. I take a bus to get to many places and it is very effective.

This is very true. I like many of my classmates take the bus everyday from our homes to school. It gives us all the opportunity to bring a mass number of people to the same area or take them on the same route to their destination. When doing this we can cut back on all the pollution that would have been created if each individual person drove on their own. If all cities incorporate this more into how the city runs the CO2 production will drop extremely stopping and slowing down the process of Global Warming.
