Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Why do we use fossil fuels over alternative fuels?

marquie

Most people know that fossil fuels speed up the effects of climate change and they still use them for every day things like driving to school, heating their house and used in making the products we buy. So why do we use fossil fuels over alternative fuels? The main reason is that fossil fuels are cheaper than the alternative fuels. One of the other reasons is that fossil fuels are everywhere. There are over 114,533 gas stations in the US alone. Making it much easier to find a gas station then an electric charging station. To make a significant impact on climate change, I think we need to change how we see cars and how we fuel them.

I agree. The fact that the US is making small changes to help the environment like adding in electric chargers for cars is great. Although everywhere cant be like O'dowd in providing this the government should see how much the people want to save the planet they live their sure to listen. Many electric cars nowadays are becoming so efficient that it can travel some models can travel as far as 300+ miles which is more than you would need in a week. We can see many car brands are making changes to help the environment in one of the biggest production of CO2 emission, Cars.

I agree with this as well, and there are other small things the government can do to help reduce CO2 emissions. One important way is cities funding and providing more places for electric cars to charge. This will help boost the number of people driving electric cars because they will realize how easy it is to own and pay for one. Also, something that the government can't really change but the media can is advertising. By advertising more electric cars through social media instead of trucks using fossil fuels it can help show why it is better to use an electric car.

I agree that fossil fuels are not better than alternative fuels, they are just cheaper and that is why they are widely accepted as our go-to fuel. Although it is well known how bad fossil fuels are for our environment, people often forget the other effects that fossil fuels have. Infact, there are 7 million premature deaths per year that can be contributed to CO2 pollution caused by burning fossil fuels for energy. Also, even thought it seems like there is plenty of these resources, it is still limited and eventually we will run out, that is if we don't ruin our atmosphere first. Converting to renewable, natural resources seems like the obvious way to go, but there are some drawbacks, the main being that alternative fuels are harder to find and prepare. The process is just too long at this point. But, we need to do something in the meantime while our sources run dry and in my opinion, all eyes should be focused on a new wave of renewable fuels. https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/ … -fuels.php

I think we use fossil fuels because it conserves energy and fossil fuels are perfect for powering our machines.  Fossil fuels are also much cheaper and they are easier to use than alternative fuels. The reason why we don't switch is because it is very expensive and no one wants to pay more to drive their car. According to UCSUSA it says that China leads the world in CO2 emissions behind the US.

I agree that we need to change how we see cars and how we fuel them.  I also agree that because fossil fuels are everywhere and cheap we use them to fuel our cars, heaters and other products but I also think that we could something about it by buying electric cars or some other type of cars that produces less CO2. CleanTechnica (https://cleantechnica.com/2012/03/08/to … ive-fuels/) gives some examples of fuels that produce less CO2  for example there is ethanol and Biodiesel. Ethanol has a negative impact on food prices and availability(mainly corn and by negative impact I mean the price is going up).  Biodiesel is a great fuel and the only problem is that its production is limited and its distribution infrastructure. The bottom line is that just because fossil fuels are cheaper and everywhere doesn't we mean we should be using these fuel to power our cars and heaters when we could be using fuels that would produce less CO2.
