Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint Results

I was far above the average transportation footprint than that of the world and region (mine was 27,766 kgs). I am constantly traveling long distances to club soccer games and practices 4-6 times a week from the summer to mid-winter and then during the spring I’m constantly driving to school soccer stuff — not to mention driving to my job. I also take 2-3 trips each year where we drive 8-18 hours depending on where my family is going. For "Home", I was less than the average person in my region with 3,797 kgs because I am very carefully to turn things off when I’m not using them and I make a point to turn off the TV and other things for other people if they haven’t already. I also try to be conservative with my use of water. I use a little bit less food than the average person in my region because I am on a little bit of a diet so I can be the best soccer player I can be (my score was 3,212 kgs). But I also rarely eat a vegetarian meal — I eat meat a lot — so that  raises it a little but more. I try not the waste any food either. I don’t think I shop nearly as much as other people my age so I was far below the average of somebody else in my region at 316 kgs.
