Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My carbon footprint

Nhiiiii

I am having a huge problem here. My carbon footprint is over 40000. Does any of you can give me tips on how to reduce my carbon footprint?

aliceuhduh

You should not use too much water and electricity.

Also if you are unable to cycle around town try using public transport as it will help reduce the carbon footprint by a fraction. You can also do the little things like closing the water while you are brushing your teeth and using reusable bags or your school bag while shopping

My biggest contributors to my footprint were my food consumption and transportation so cutting back on cookies or other snacks and using other forms of transportation like biking or the bus should help.

Try finding out what your local recycling or composting options are; those can really help reduce your footprint. You might be surprised at the number of things you can compost or recycle instead of throwing into the trash. Additionally, limiting things like plane trips can help a lot since airplanes are really bad for the environment.

You can also try buying secondhand clothing from thrift stores. Since a lot of the synthetic material isn’t biodegradable that can lead to a rise in the carbon footprint as opposed to buying it second hand. Cheers from Miami !

My biggest contributor to my footprint was the energy consumption at home. So try little things like conserving and preventing wasted energy, this will lower your carbon footprint by a ton.

You should start by doing small things, like turning off the water when you brush your teeth or turning off lights when you don't need them. For me, I had a large footprint in the food section. You should try to eat more vegetarian meals or cut back on individually packaged snacks. Also, you should try to recycle any scraps of paper or cardboard that you have.

Hello,

You should begin by making small changes each day, such as  turning off the lights when you are not using them or being aware of the packaging on any items you purchase. Food can be a shockingly big part of your carbon footprint, so I advice eating more vegetarian meals instead of meat and snacks. You can use public transportation, such as a bus, to get to school each day if possible. For home, you could be less reliant on the air condition and heater. You can also look into purchasing solar panels or LED light bulbs.
Hope this helps!

where are you from and how do you help out carbon footprint

Nhiiiii

Hi Alexander, my name is Nhi and I am from Vietnam. I help out with the carbon footprint by not littering. Well, before, I don't really care much about my carbon footprint, so it's not a surprise that I have a really high carbon footprint. All the small activities like not closing the tab water while brushing my teeth to turning on the air con for more than 10 hours are normal to me. And I didn't realize that these small activities will form a big one. I am currently trying to reduce my carbon footprint by stopping my bad habits. Like the others said above, I am trying to do as they say.

Nhiiiii

Thank you all of you guys for taking your time and reply to me. Yes, you all are correct. Small changes each day will make a big difference in the future. I will try to follow you guys' advices. Once again, thank you!
Good luck on reducing your carbon footprint too!
