Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Reducing Transportation Footprint

ababbbrott

When looking at every country's average carbon footprint, transportation always seems to have the highest amount of carbon released. If everyone were able to carpool, or ride bikes, or walk, or even take the bus, there would be less privately owned cars driving every day, thus reducing the transportation footprint per person. If transportation goes down, as will the overall carbon footprint.  Also, once electric cars come out, those could really help decrease the CO2 being emitted.

I compleatly agree. If we were to use less gas cars and transport by carpool, bus, foot or bike we could leave less of a carbon footprint. I also agree that we should start to use more electric cars and buses.

I definitely agree with this post because people are constantly on the move whether its from flying or driving and not many people take the time to look at other options. Transportation is a common problem with many people’s carbon footprint results and I think everyone should take some time to think about other ways of getting places and if they have the money, then buy fuel efficient cars. I think a nice way to start is simply carpooling with a friend or neighbor.

I agree with this, and yes, transportation is a major problem. Cars seem to be biggest factor of our carbon footprints. Using electric cars is definately a good solution but the problem is getting people to use them. Electric cars are already out but they are used by limited numbers of people for many reasons. One because it is hard to find charging ports when they are out and about. Second because of how there are so many more non electric cars to pick from that are cheaper and easier to find. In order to get people to use electric cars we will have to either make them more common and less expensive, or they need to make a law to make people buy electric cars. But in order to do those things, we would have to battle the billionaire oil companies that have lobbyists in the government who would never let electric cars ruin their business.

I agree with this, because during my research I saw the same thing and think that our carbon footprint could decrease a lot if people started to use othe modes of transportation rather that driving a personal car to all their everyday events. I also agree that when electric cars start being mass produced, people will realize the difference it can make and will starte transitioning to electric cars. I also believe that if electric cars get big enough, gas stations will start adding charging ports for their electric car customers.

This is a really great point. When thinking of methods of transportation, most people think of personal cars. I think that there are other, unrated ways of getting places that should be used more. For example, walking and not taking a car unless it is necessary or going on just one big trip in your car to do errands. Basically just being mindful of your ways of transportation can be super helpful

I agree with this. When looking at my personal data, transportation was a huge factor into the amount of CO2 that was emitted. Biking and walking is a very simple way to reduce your footprint. Especially if you live close to your work, school, etc it may be much more efficient too. Also, carpooling to and from school is a great way to reduce your footprint as well, because you still get to and from where you need without the pollution of multiple cars.

I completely agree with this post. Anya, you make a very strong point talking about how in every country it’s their transportation that releases the most carbon, and that’s just simply because there are 7 billion people in the world and everybody always seems to be having to travel someplace. Now, what I feel like would be the most effective solution would be for governments around the world to start putting more regulations on cars carbon emissions, and also start investing in finding a cleaner and greener source of energy to fuel the cars. However, that may take a while to develop, as I feel the best possible way for us as individuals to make an impact instantly is to really step back and take a look at our travels and reflect on how we could’ve been more efficient, and also plan out future ways to get around; for example planning out car pools and riding your bike on those short distance trips, which another plus to this is that it could even potentially help you out in life making you more organized as a person and getting in some exercise.

I agree with this statement, transportation seems to be the largest contribution for one's carbon footprint. However it is one of the easiest ones to fix. Carpooling on the way to school, riding on school buses, walking or riding your bike, or even buying more eco friendly cars such as hybrids and electric cars are just some of the ways you can reduce your CO2 output.

Most people are using cars to go to places that might be across the street from them when they could walk, its a waste
