Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (1. gimnazija Varaždin, Ludbreg, CRO)

mihaelbacani

I predicted that my footprint would be about the same as the average person in
Croatia, and the world.
Based on my input, my total footprint is 5992 kg of CO₂ per year, compared to
an average of 5736 kg for Croatia, and 3791 kg (= 8358 lb) worldwide.

By category, my totals are:

Transportation: 2465 kg
Home:868 kg
Food:2345 kg
Purchases:314 kg

My transportation stats are very high because I drive a lot with my car on gigs, so there is no chance to change it, and for food I don't realy know why they are so high if I eat a lot of organic food produced by my own garden.

Dear Michael, for your food footprint you can go back to the calculator and start changing your food choices to see why yours is higher than you expected.  If I had to guess, maybe it is the number of meat / dairy meals that you eat each week?

Michael--It is very interesting to compare my carbon footprint with yours, because we are almost identical in transportation and food, however my home foot print is quadruple yours, and my purchases is much higher as well. I believe this disparity is largely due to the fact that I have a lawn at my house, and because my family buys a lot of products new, many of which we probably do not need. In total, my footprint is 9582 kg of CO₂ per year, which is around the average 9727 kg for California, USA. Although I am just under the average Californian, looking at your footprint makes me think about how much CO₂  is being put into the environment just from California, as we have a much higher average.

As for why your food footprint is high, my guess would be because your diet involves a lot of dairy products. Here is a link with an interesting comparison between different foods and its CO₂  emission: http://timeforchange.org/eat-less-meat- … on-of-food

*Jason - probably is this what you said

*Byer - I think that is with me the same problem about transportation; I have also big lawn so i burned a lot of fuel to cut the grass, but there is also the vineyard and other activites that include fuel combustion, so I now understand why are my stats so high

Hi Michael,
It is shocking that your home carbon footprint is 868 kg and mine in Florida, USA is 15,160. I have been researching ways to reduce it but getting it as low as yours seems impossible. I use LED lights, my home is only 1510 square ft., and I turn lights off when I leave a room, try not to use the oven, and I do not use a lot of appliances. I would love to know how yours is so low and get some ideas on how to reduce mine.
Thanks

Hey Amy,
My home is also not so big, it's 185 square meters (about 2000 sq ft.), past three years we have changed our heating system from only gass to eco solar system, that was quite expensive project, we have also built this year the tubes with circulating water into our fireplace, so the heat from fireplace was used to heat our big water boiler (in past we had to heat all day and night tank full of water to have a nice warm water in the morning for taking shower), now just remember if you have ever made coffee, or something with boiling water, you know that the water has very high specific heat capacity, and how long it took to just boil 1 liter of water?!, know just compare that with large boiler which has inside 200 liters of water, how many gass you need to heat it!

That is awesome that you have a garden and grow your own food sometimes. Comparing my footprint to yours, my transportation is a lot bigger. This is very interesting to me because when I want food I go get it, and you grow food; which I think is very cool and something I would like to try.

I think it's really interesting how low your footprint is in comparison to mine. My total is 14,694 kgs, which is actually a little lower than my region (North Carolina, USA). Keep up the good work!

Hi Mihael,
My name is Deborah and I think it really good that you mostly eat organic foods from your own personal garden. My transportation was also high, because I drive around a lot too, but my home for some reason was the highest out of all of them

mikeusa

I think that it is really good for you to have such a low carbon footprint and compared to my region its only about a third. My transportation is the highest as well and it is good that you have your own garden

Hi Mihael, It's really interesting to see how low your footprint is compared to mine here in the United States. It is rather shocking to see that you eat a lot of organic food and your footprint for food is still high. Is all of the food you eat organic? If there is still a big portion of it that isn't that may be why it is still so high.

gabe-h

I think that eating organic foods and foods that you grow really does help the environment. It is also pretty healthy as well. In order to lower my own footprint, I suppose I should probably start doing that as well.
