Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

There are people doing too much or people doing too little

matteopozzo

In the past years I have been compared with many realities that have to do with climate change, and I have arrived to a conclusion.
Watching documentaries and living some experiences myself I noticed how there either people who do a lot for the environment, or people who do to little, there is not a way in between. There are either people who wake up every morning to clean their local beach for example, or people who think that  saving water meanwhile brushing their teeth will make a change. Now don't get me wrong, I know that everyone has to start from the little things, and I also truly believe that if everyone did their own small part, the world would be a little more healthier than it is today, but i'm saying that us human beings, starting from me (I have a high Carbon Footprint respect the rest of the world), have to do much more to really improve this negative situation.

I confirm what you said. You're right: the people who really care about the climate change do a lot to improve their carbon footprint, while a lot of people don't do the minimum necessary to improve the world's situation.

I agree with you. There are unfortunately more people that are doing too much few, even because the climatic changes don't directly touch them, or because they believe that the global warming doesn't have repercussions on their life. As you have said, we must begin from the small things, for example to remember to extinguish the light when we go out of a room or  use more the public transport. The small actions can change our planet, but we must not be the only ones to do her, on the contrary the whole community. However it is true that around 100 firms are responsible of the 71% of the global emission of CO2, this is how much Pedro Faria affirms, technical manager of the Carbon Majors Database ( https://www.eticasgr.it/blog/aziende-pi … nanti-co2/ ).

I somewhat agree.  In my experience, everyone harms the environment more than they help it.  Just by being alive, people add to waste simply by doing day to day chores.  Because of this, it is more accurate to say everyone does too little for the environment, however, in order to get people to do more, they must be aware of the problem.  The environmental damages we inflict can rarely be seen in everyday life, which is why it is hard to get people to change when they don’t see the damage in the first place.
