Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (NC, USA)

ronnie2517

My name is Ronnie. I'm in Mooresville, NC, of the USA. I am 17. My carbon footprint was surprising to me. The one thing that stood out to me the most was how large of an impact my transportation had. It ruined my otherwise decent carbon footprint. My total was 81,171kgs, with 74,751kgs being taken up by transportation. Obviously that causes me to have a way larger footprint than the average in my region. This is not what I expected. I am definitely going to have to change when it comes to my transportation. I’m going to try to walk or bike places more often than driving. I am also going to try to carpool my friends in my car and car pool with other people when I don't drive. Besides reducing that portion, I am going to try to do things at home as well. I’m going to try to reuse more items at home, and waste less water by turning the water off while i brush my teeth.

I think that definitely reducing transportation would be the best thing to do because that is a lot for travel.

Your results are surprisingly high, as you have said it yourself, but maybe you made some kind of a mistake while answering the questions in the calculator. I advise you to take the challenge again just to check if any miscalculations actually happened.
