Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Coral reefs

Lia_d_21

Coral reefs are slowly dying because of the increasing temperature and acidification of the water. Trash islands made of tonnes of plastic waste are floating in the oceans causing diseases and mortality to all the marine species and also to the the coral reefs that represent the habitat of many other living organisms.
I feel bad about this and I think it's time to act and prevent the coral reefs death.
What do you think and what should we do?

Leoni

The coral reefs have been damaged mostly by bleaching, overfishing, invasive species, and chemicals from waste and trash. It's sad that our oceans have reached this point and I hope people take action.
Some ways we can help are by conserving water as much as we can. Also eating sustainable fish and sea life and not overfishing certain areas. Also, you can use organic sunscreen and don't support companies that use pesticides and fertilizers because the chemicals eventually go into the ocean.

Coral reefs are beautiful structures of nature. They’re important to the aquatic ecosystem, supportive structures of hundreds of different forms of life. I have hopes measures will be taken to preserve them.

I don’t know what solution there is to thi. I think it wi would like to do more research on it though. I agree that this isn’t a really sad thing to happen. I think it is really sad when nature that wouldn otherwise be pristine and beautiful is destroyed by humans recklessness.

I completely agree with what you say, but in order for the temperature to go down, we must lower our carbon emissions significantly. This was what the Paris Climate Treaty was made for, and is why almost all nations have joined. (cough...cough... except US)
