Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Are we doing enough?

mmarto

I was thinking about climate changes and environment protection when I asked myself: "Am I doing enough to make a real change happen?".

I usually hear people saying that there are a lot of things we can do to improve the current world situation, that there are a lot of small actions that we can do to actually protect the environment.. but a lot of them conclude their talk saying:
"Well.. this time I'll pass, there are a lot of people that can do it, it doesn't have to be me. I'm not gonna change anything by myself.".

I think that this is the worst attitude ever!

It's true, to make a change we have to do this together, collaborate and help one another but this doesn't mean we can refuse to do anything because "others will do it". If every member of our community, every human being, starts thinking like this.. well, we're just gonna drown in our own actions.

Small changes can really make the difference if we do this together! They don't have to be drastic and change completely our lives. We can help our environment by turning off lights we don't actually need, by tur ning off water while we're brushing our teeth. Even just avoiding to buy 5 plastic bags when we just need one or when we actually have a lot of cloth bags at home, etc..

Let me know if you think you're doing something to make a change or if you agree with the attitude I mentioned before!

Hi. I agree with you. I think that in general much more can be done, even if I think that the changes in favour of a more ecological world made by individuals can be so useful... Let me explain better: if the big world industries took a step to have a better world, things could change. In addition, there are very poor countries, their first objective is to survive: this means that, although they are perhaps the biggest polluters, their resources to change things are not enough.
In my opinion, however, it is useful to do something starting with us as individuals, because in my opinion large industries do little or anything.
I read a little time ago the project "zero waste" that I think could be interesting for everyone, I forward the link so you can learn more: https://www.goingzerowaste.com
What do you think about this?

To be honest, I don’t think we are doing enough to save the world from the pollution, I’m sure that we can do much more, but unfortunately many people didn’t understand yet the severity of the problem and the negative effect that our actions will have on the next generations. In fact I’m convinced, that who will pay the negative consequences of our actions will be the next generations and in particular our children and not us. This is for sure one of the main reasons, why we tend to postpone and underestimate the problem. Governments also have their responsibilities, we can not expect that poor countries invest the same resources and money to implement the necessary measures to reduce the pollution as the rich one, even if we all know that in many cases they are the main polluters on the planet. In my opinion it is fair and correct that the most industrialized countries must help the underdeveloped countries financing the necessary reforms. In fact the air and the  seas have no borders and that’s why we all have to contribute to save our world, regardless of where we live.

Hi. I definitely agree with you. Some people want to change the world or part of their community but just doesn't know how. Or some people don't think about how pollution, greenhouse gases, and other elements affects people lives. At my school, we did something called the Lexus Eco Challenge where we needed to come up with a plan regarding Air and Climate and try to change something with it in our community. My group raised money by selling cookies and candies and we got enough money to get solar-powered batteries to all the middle schools within our county. It is a little bit different from the topic that we are discussing but it still impacted something. Eventually we could grow bigger and if everyone is in the same mindset then we could take action and certainly do something about this situation.

I feel like it's not just are we not doing enough but it's how many people doing because if you and your family are doing something to help global warming and nobody else in your neighborhood are doing something then what point ..... but yes you are making your contribution. If you show people that doing something good for the earth and even maybe good for you then you can actually make a difference in my opinion.
