Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

What do you do to help stop the climate change?

Ainhoa

Hello My name is Ainhoa, I live in Spain, in a city in the Valencian Community on the Mediterranean coast, Denia. My carbon footprint is lower than the average by 1100Kg. In a few months I started to become more aware of climate change, a problem that affects us all regardless of the nationalities and where we live, which together we can try to stop it, one of the changes I have made is to try to recycle everything I can, be bags,  cardboard, glass etc. What do you do to help eradicate the problem?

SARARUSABODMM

Hello, My name is Sara Redfield. I live in Oakland California. My carbon footprint is more than 20,000 kg higher than the average carbon foot print. This sounds very bad, however I want to try and lower my carbon footprint to help stop climate change. I will start by taking shorter showers, not leaving my lights on for so long, and I can watch less tv to preserve energy.

Some things I do are: eat locally, buy less package goods, use more reusable items etc. I know that there are many more things I can do, and as I go on with my life, I try to incorporate these things. Some more ways to reduce carbon footprint, according to https://cotap.org/reduce-carbon-emissions/ , are: using public transportation, less air travel, reducing home energy carbon emissions by using insulation, eating local foods and less meats and finally, having efficient home appliances (Most labeled "ENERGY STAR"). These are only a few ways to reduce carbon emissions presented by https://cotap.org/reduce-carbon-emissions/ . However, if they are any more ways, please reply to this and tell me what you think is most important.

I agree climate change is a very big problem in the world today. There are ways we can change it, but it will take some time. If most people come together in the world and we devise a smart effective plan, I think we can get some real progress in solving the problem of climate change.

Also, the average total carbon footprint for Bishop O'dowd is 18,568 kg, and my carbon footprint is about 12,000 kg higher.

I think climate change is still possible to change if we take action right now. I think one way like you said is recycling, its easy and doable if we can all just work to recycle more, then we can start to make changes in our carbon footprints.

One thing that I do to try to limit climate change is to try to turn off lights in my house when I am not using them. I also try to turn off my fosset when I am not using it, for example, while I am brushing my teeth. The last thing that I try to do is keep reusable containers with me so that I don't use plastic ones.

To help stop climate change I almost always make sure that before I leave my home or other places I turn off the lights. This helps so that we don't waste electricity since the power stations that supply electricity vary in their carbon dioxide emission rates. So the more electricity we waste the more it contributes to the CO2 in our atmosphere. That is why I always try to save electricity and turn off the lights before I leave.

Simple things like putting compost, recycling, trash in the right bins can help the environment by preventing fossil fuels from being burned when it is unnecessary. Carpooling also allows people to produce less carbon, especially when they carpool using an electric car.

Hi Ainhoa, I'm Alejandra and live in California. I agree with you that regardless of nationalities, we all need to be aware and advocate for climate change. In my community, I take public transportation when possible and am conscious of what I buy to eradicate this problem. Conserving even just the smallest of energy makes an impact.

BrandonDUSABODMM

My name is Brandon dela Cruz. I live in Castro Valley, CA and my carbon footprint is 18,772 kgs, which is about 9,000 kgs higher than the average of CO2 consumption in California. The reason for my carbon footprint being so high is that I travel a lot, particularly through flying. I compete nationally and internationally for taekwondo. However, there are changes I can make in order to  lower these levels, like turning off the water when washing dishes.

EmelAUSABODMM

Hi Im Emel and I also live in California. I agree that climate change is getting worse and worse and we all need to start making changes ad acting now in order  to stop climate change. One of the things I do to help climate change  is use energy saving lights and we recently switched to those. Also, we have a heater but we don't use it much which helps reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. Little things like this will and can definitely help with climate change by first reducing our carbon footprints.
