Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint. Daria. Rybnik, Poland.

parolex

Hi. My name is Daria, I'm 17 and I'm from Poland. I predicted that my footprint would be about the same as the average person i Poland and about the same as average human. I spend a lot of time in transport. For example: Every day I go to school by bus. To be honest I'm going by bus everywhere. At home I love to watch TV series, so I spend a lot of time watching TV. My grandparents are living with me. They are always at home, so they are watching TV all the time and listening to the radio too. Maybe that's why in category called 'Home' I have 4,074 kgs when my region have 2,858 kgs. When it comes to 'Food'.. My family tries to eat healthy and don't throw any food. In 'Food' I have 1,724 kgs. I don't like many things but I'm trying not to waste any food. Finally 'Purchases' we have a special containers for a rubbish, so we recycle everything: glass, paper, plastic... We are trying to use a reusable things. What do you think about it?

I think that is an amazing way to live. Yes you use a lot of transport and you may watch quite a bit of TV, but you recycling and not wasting food is and amazing thing to do. I think sometimes you could try walking just to cut down on your transportation footprint, but I think your doing a pretty good job.

@kylie3 what about your 'transportation'?

I thinks it’s really admirable that your family makes an effort to eat healthy and to waste as little food as possible. I also think it’s neat that someone living on a completely different continent from me can lead a life that’s so similar to mine. I also take the bus to and from school everyday, which I think is a large reason why my transportation total is so high. I enjoy watching TV shows as well, like many other people, which would contribute to why my home total is close to the average for my region.

Hi Daria! By looking at your data, it seems like people in Poland have a much lower carbon footprint than people do in the United Staes! I live in North Carolina and the average carbon footprint at “home” is 6148 kgs. Personally, my carbon footprint was lower than average for “home” as it was 2188 kgs. I think that this is because I do not watch TV a lot or own a cell phone. If you are searching for ways to reduce your carbon footprint at home, I suggest doing simple things like turning off the TV or radio when you leave a room. Just by doing this would save significant amounts of energy and help reduce the amount of carbon emissions released into the environment.In regards to your results, I also think that it’s great that your family recycles and uses reusable materials! By doing this, your family saves great amounts of energy and productively uses resources available to all of you!

So.. What are you doing when you don't watch the TV? When it comes to turning off the TV when I leave my room.  I'm trying to do it all the time.  But honestly sometimes I just forget about it. Do you have the special containers for a rubbish too? @Cassandra R.

So your carbon footprint is good but if you want it to be better I suggest that you do stop watching as much TV and same with your grandparents, because not only is that not good to your carbon footprint its also not good for your health.

Hi Daria! I think that by recycling everything from glass, paper, plastic and reusing everything as possible, you are able to reduce your carbon footprint by a lot! Compared to Poland and North Carolina (my region), the average carbon footprint for "home" is much more. The average in North Carolina is 6,148 kgs! To reduce your home carbon footprint, I would try to limit the amount of television and radio you use a day.

I think that recycling is very efficient and good for the environment!! Whatever you can do to help try to do!!! Keep up the good work! Maybe you should try suggesting some other type of game instead of watching television all the time!!

Recycling is the best thing to do for your environment. Just by recycling glass, paper, bottles, and other recyclable things, it can really help a lot.

You have a sufficient carbon footprint.  I suggest that maybe your family shouldn't watch TV as much or keep the radio on. Your family is also big having your grandparents living with you so it would make a big difference if everything wasn't on as much. You could do things as going outside and enjoying the weather. I love how your family doesn't waste food because my family tends to waste a lot of food.

You are doing an excellent job in almost all the ways but I think that you need to decrease your electricity.
