Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Growing/ Buying locally

I know that buying food locally is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint because it does not need to be shipped but is this always a viable option? The same applies to growing your own food, it is a great idea and way to reduce your footprint but how viable is it?

Very interesting topic/question I have not seen brought up yet. In general, I think it is a great idea to buy or grow locally. Although growing locally can be very challenging and requires much effort, I think it is pretty realistic and easy to buy locally. Buying food locally has a great impact on carbon emissions because while an average piece of produce travels around 1500 miles, a locally grown piece of produce only travels around 100 miles. These statistics show that locally grown or bought food decreases the amount of carbon released majorly. Therefore, to answer your question it would really help prevent global warming by growing produce, but if not possible, buying locally can also have a positive impact on our environment.
