Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint-Natalia, Rybnik, Poland
Hello! My name is Natalia.
I am 17 years old. I live in Rybnik, Poland.
I think that my carbon footprint is just average, but I would like to know your opinion. My carbon footprint is 6,832kgs of CO2, in Poland it is 6.526 kgs of CO2. I have the highest score in the category called 'home' - 4.941 kgs. This is almost half more than in my region. I wonder why I have such a high score. Maybe I have too many light bulbs in my house.
What do you think about it?
Hi Natalia, I really enjoyed reading your results on your footprint! Your footprint is much higher than mine! Ours are both high so we need to try and cut down on it. You might need to turn off the lights more often! other than that,Great Job!
I think that it might be what you use in your home. It could be due to the amount of light bulbs, or I could be because of how your house is heated or cooled. It also might be because of electronics so if you use a lot of electronics maybe you could cut down on the amount of energy you use from that.
I really appreciate your advice. Maybe I spend too much time in front of computer ![]()
I have at home an exotic pet which needs heating and lighting all the time.
Perhaps for this reason my carbon footprint in the category of 'home' is very high.
HI think that it is because of your home. Maybe you have too much electricity being used. I think that your carbon footprint is very nicely done
@skylerb
what is your carbon footprint?
My home category also had the largest number. Some things Im going to try and you can also try are as follows: turn off lights when you leave the room, unplug things when not in use, recycle, switch to CFL lightbulbs. These are just a few of the many things you can do. I hope this helps you!
My home category is also the highest, and I agree with Rachel H on recycling, turn off any lights that are not being used, and switching to CFL lightbulbs.
I really enjoyed reading your results on your carbon footprint, I thought it was very interesting because your carbon footprint is so much lower than mine. Where I'm from your carbon footprint would have been below average. I think you did a great job! The lower the footprint the better it is.
Natalia, I really enjoyed read over you footprint its very low. But Low is good. Great Job!
I thank you for your help. I am happy that I am not alone with the problem of CO2 emissions in my house. I thank you again for your help.
I would like to know your carbon footprint results.
I think that maybe you should make sure all the lights and tv's are turned off when nobody is using them or when nobody is home. I think that would help bring down your score.
Maybe you could recycle or turn off the lights when you are not in a room.
Hi Natalia! I think that your "home" carbon footprint is not the highest because of the amount of light bulbs in your house but instead, is because of how much and how long you use each light bulb. My home carbon footprint is low compared to the average for my region. The regions average (North Carolina) is 6,148 kgs and my personal average was 5,187 kgs. I think this is because I make sure I turn off the lights after I leave a room and I make sure I turn off electronics such as the television whenever I am not using it, which could also help you reduce your carbon footprint.
Your home section isn't too bad. It's probably due to things already mentioned such as the light bulb use or perhaps water use? My home use is 3,555kgs, but I am really careful with home energy. It'll probably lower from just turning off a few lights here or there.
Thank you for your advice. I will try to adapt to them. I hope that you're right. I wonder if, for example, my computer is turned off, but the cable is in the nest if it gets a lot of energy? ![]()
Thanks to your advice I often turn off the light when I go out of the room.
I hope that through my carbon footprint becomes lower.
Maybe when you stay home and have a lot of electronics plug in.
Maybe you're right, but I'm trying to always turn off energy when I don't use it.
Your home carbon footprint isn't that bad compared to many other people's averages. This may result from the amount of lights you have in your house and how long they stay on. One way to decrease this is by not using your lights during the day and use natural sunlight instead. Another way is by turning off lights in the rooms you are not using.
your footprint is a little bit higher than mine! just cut down on the electricity at home.
Thank you for your advice, I think my high score may also result from the fact that I have a very big house and need a lot of energy to light up it ![]()
No I do not think that you carbon footprint is bad! Compared to other people, yours is about average! I definitely think that the ight bulbs could have something to do with it. Maybe how long you leave them on? Or what kind of light bulbs you use? But there are other facts like turning on your heating and air conditioning! Those would also affect your average!
Compared to mine, your carbon footprint is really good. To lower your home energy usage, look at what kinds of lightbulbs you have. If they are LEDs you should switch to CFLs because they are better for our environment. Try to turn lights and fans off when they are not in use, and watch less TV.
