Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Water Conservation in Showers

daltond-usa-bod-1lh

Conserving water is easy, but also many teenage students can be tempted to take long showers, or use lots of water during bathroom visits. The average American shower uses 17.2 gallons (65.1 liters) and lasts for 8.2 minutes at an average flow rate of 2.1 gallons per minute. That is a lot of wasted water just for one shower visit! It is possible to cut down on shower times,  and wasted water and carbon footprint output just by putting a bucket under the shower water as it heats up. After it is heated, the bucket is taken away, and that water can be reused for watering grass, flowers, and much more. By simply doing this students can save up to 3,000 gallons of water, and repurpose it in many other uses.

Conserving water can definitely have a dramatic impact in reducing carbon footprint and does not hav to be as difficult as it may seem. As you discussed, repurposing water from the shower to use in the garden can be very effective considering 2.1 gallons is used per minute. I would also like to add that installing new energy-saving faucet aerators and shower heads can reduce water usage by 20% while still providing quality performance (in some cases even superior performance). The average family can save 3,500 gallons of water annually which averages to around 410 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Furthermore, turning off the sink when brushing your teeth and doing the dishes can be just as helpful since they take up more than 12% of your home's water usage. All in all, conserving water does not have to be as difficult as it may appear and with some work can be easily achieved.

It is true that conserving water is an easy way to help the environment that is often overlooked by many people. There is a lot of water wasted when people shower and showing is usually longer than it needs to be. 2.1 gallons of water for every minute that people shower uses a lot of excess water but some people like my sister who consistently takes 15+ minute showers and refuses to cut down on her time could benefit from a shower head from the Nebia shower. This shower uses only 0.75 gallons of water per minute compared to an average of 2.1 gallons. This shower can help people who like to take long showers but also care about the environment. The link below will take you to a video about the more efficient shower head.

The conservation of water through showers can definitely reduce carbon footprints. As you have stated, 2.1 gallons of water is a large amount per minute; this water could be placed towards other, more important projects that could reduce carbon footprints, such as the watering of plants and trees which consume carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In addition, this conservation of water could also save budget for both the providers and the consumers that could be placed towards conservation efforts.
