Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

The air is no longer air

Tabita17

Air pollution is an invisible problem. However, the consequences for our daily health and comfort are serious.

What molecules are damaging to us and our bodies? If they are invisible how did people figure out they where there? And what should we do about it how can we fix this massive issue?

The air also contains very small amounts of other gases, known as residual gases, including carbon dioxide and methane. In addition, there are other gases and particles (including soot and metals) emitted into the atmosphere by both natural and man-made sources. The composition of air in the atmosphere is constantly changing. Some substances in the air have a high reactive potential.

I agree that air pollution is an invisible problem and invisible problems are harder to solve making it more dangerous to our environment and climate. But, air pollution is very important and is definitely one of the bigger impacts on climate change. Air pollution and climate change are closely related. The main sources of CO2 emissions – the extraction and burning of fossil fuels – are not only key drivers of climate change, but also major sources of air pollutants. Furthermore, many air pollutants that are harmful to human health and ecosystems also contribute to climate change by affecting the amount of incoming sunlight that is reflected or absorbed by the atmosphere, with some pollutants warming and others cooling the Earth.
