Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

A great way to get rid of carbon footprint is by eating more local grown food and more veggies. Eating local grown food and veggies  is very good for you and very good for the environment.

I agree, eating locally would be an important step in reducing a carbon footprint. Since locally grown foods take less time and effort to travel, it reduces the need for some of these major contributors to CO2 emissions, such as trucks or planes. It also reduces the need to use plastic to contain the food, which helps with reduction as well.

I agree that we should be waiting more local foods. Not only are we helping the environment but we would also be helping local businesses and growing the economy.

This is a valid point because locally grown foods reduce the carbon footprint in multiple ways. Local foods that come from farms take less carbon to produce. Since they don’t come from large farms, they have less carbon footprint. These smaller farms take less carbon to run which allows them to have a smaller carbon footprint.

I can agree with this because organic and locally grown food would benefit yourself and the environment. Most organic food is healthy for you which means if you buy more of this type of food, you can be healthy while reducing carbon footprint from transportation that goes on in supermarkets and stores. Therefore, locally grown foods reduces the carbon footprint for you and places that sell the product.

I also agree with this. If every human bought only locally sourced foods and drinks, it would save the planes coming from all over the world (putting off emissions) and trucks too.

Eating locally is sustainable and great for the environment while also being great for the community. The second step after eating locally is composting and then growing your own food. Composting keeps things out of the landfill and doesn’t let all the unused nutriants go to waist. People then have very rich soil to grow food locally whether it’s for you community or yourself.

I agree that eating more vegetables and fewer meats and dairy would help the Earth. It is a very easy fix that almost everybody could make and can help drastically.

I agree with this statement because eating local and organic food drastically lowers the carbon produced by the production of this food. Organic food does not use pesticides and other pollutants to the environment. Eating local food is also very good for the environment because less carbon is emitted during the transportation. When food is not locally sourced it often has to be transported by trucks, ships, and planes, which emits a significant amount of carbon. If you buy food from small farms that aren’t big commercial companies, they often produce quite a bit less carbon.
