Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Results of My Footprint and What Changes Need to be Made

aly_farrington

When looking at my data, I was surprised that it was lower than the average of where I live, but I also realized that some improvements still need to be made. I realized that my purchase amounts were low in comparison to most, but my Transportation and Home levels are higher. I realized that I need to find better ways to get around, carpooling is a struggle since I don’t have many neighbors around me and don’t know many people where I live, all of my friends are 20-30minutes away, also because of my location I can’t walk and there is no public transportation, when I am in town I do walk most places, but from my house it is hard to get around. I also realizied when I am in town there isn’t much public transportation either though, so I will typically have to drive to where I want to go if it’s far away. I think if we put public buses from town to town, it would really help since when I am in one town most of the places I need or want to go are in another. I think a lot of people would uses the public buses if we had them and that would really help. Looking at my Home data  I realized that I take showers that are way to long, averagely 35 minutes, which is unnecessary, after realizing this I have started to take shorter showers and will continue to do so. I also realized that I need to use less electricity, I always forget to turn off the lights, and it affects my carbon footprint in a big way. I really want to change my habit of leaving the lights on when I leave a room, but I know this will take more effort since it is a really bad habit I have.
