Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

The Desire to Refresh

Imagine what life was like when cellphones, tablets, or computers did not exist.  Although it is hard to imagine, life without screens occurred not too long ago.  At that time, communication was done face-to-face rather than through an email or text message.  Once technology was introduced, it opened up many news doors  of communication that would soon take over the basic interaction between people.
Every time I go out into the town and I come across a restaurant, I always find that person who is looking down rather than up and into the person right across the table.  In this modern age, the United States has developed a dependency on technology and cannot seem to take our hands off of the latest gadget.  Advertisements has convinced the public eye that the latest update is a need rather than a want.  Although it has been well disguised by the marketers, the latest update is actually a want rather than a need (to some extent).  I believe that technology such as phones or computers can be a need when it is a source of communication, but can easily turn into a want when  it is constantly being updated.
Personally, in the past 2 years I have replaced my phone 4 times.  In my defense however, Apple replaced my phone 3 times because my cellphone would not function.  Besides this special 2 year case, I usually replace my phone every 2-3 years even though there is nothing wrong with them.  I think this sensation of "needing to update" is due to large promotions that captivate your attention and persuade you to buy their product.  Furthermore, when I do get a new device, I fail to consider the environmental impact.  Now that I reflect on it, I realize the amount of fossil fuels being used to transport the product, and even the materials that make it, is very damaging to our environment and resources.  In all honestly, I have to plead guilty that I feel the need to constantly refresh my social media feed.  I believe the sources in my life, such as advertisements and peer groups, have influenced me to develop this bad habit.  In order to break it, I must replace the bad habit with a new one.  A possible replacement could just be reverting back to the lifestyle where technology simply did not exist and entertainment was filled by physical activity amongst friends.  By eliminating technology, (not saying it is easy to do) human interactions can become more meaningful because you are not consumed by the desire to refresh and you begin to look up.
