Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Cell Phones and Labeling Wants as "Needs"
As technology advances and new gadgets are churned out of factories, I think we lose sense of the underlying purpose of cell phones. To me, if a cell phone can call, text, and last the whole day, it works just fine for me. I've never had an iPhone, in fact, I've never had a smartphone. Over the years, my flip/slide phones have worked just fine. Of course I want a smartphone, both for ease of use and to fit in, but I know I don't need it. A lot of the time, I'll hear things like "I need and iPhone" or "I need this or that app." I think the line between needs and wants has been blurred to the point where we think we need something when we really just want it and *can* get it. If we step back and look at what we really need, we realize that what we have right now might work just as well as the new gadget. Just ask yourself before you buy something new: Is this something that I truly need? Or is it just "cooler" and supposedly "better" than what I have now?
Eric, I agree with you. Technology has advanced so much that it has affected the generations of people into wanting things that they don't need. People are selfishly wanting an expensive product just so they can fit in or look cool, when there are people who are barely able to afford a day's meal or a home to live in. To think that people are now so absorbed by technology and not their surroundings now is sad, and it's even worse that people believe that they actually need a new product like a smartphone, when it really isn't a necessity. I think it's fine if you want to get something nice or expensive every now and then, but if you state that you need that product, then you are dead wrong. That's the problem with society today; we are too demanding. We want things that will make us feel better or make life slightly easier for ourselves, when there are people starving in both the USA and foreign countries. If only people could put their wants aside and focus on their needs as well as the needs of others, the world would be a better place.
