Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
We don't need most of the things we have
Society has reached a point where we can hardly distinguish our needs from our wants. Since technology is so useful for us we tend to think that it is a need but it's not really. We want to have the new Samsung Galaxy S5 but we think we need it because it is waterproof and we believe one day we will be in a situation when we need it. I know that I don't really need most of the gadgets I buy, but it feels necessary in the moment I am buying it. I also know that Wi-Fi is not a need but I don't really want to live without it doesn't matter to me. Its not that I'm addicted, its just that I want what I want. Just because I don't really need something doesn't stop me from buying it.
We believe we need Wi-Fi , computers, and phones and that we can't live without them because we allow our whole lives to revolve around it. Generations have survived without technology before, so it isn't really a need.
I agree with you on this, Naomy. It's something I have been thinking about myself a lot lately because of how spoiled so many younger children are now. They don't realize that playing on their parents' cell phones or tablets isn't the only way to have fun, and it makes me really sad. They feel like they need these new things. I think it would be a very positive change for technology to not hold such a central part in how people view entertainment. I think that like you, they realize that they don't need it, but they cannot bring themselves to disconnect.
I agree with what you're saying Naomy, but I disagree as well. I agree that we don't need all this technology but it is nice to have it. It helps us keep up with the latest trends and having all the latest technology doesn't make us feel out of the loop. I agree that it is more of a want than a need. However, I strongly disagree with the statement "Generations have survived without technology before, so it isn't really a need." I disagree with that because yes in the 21st century we do need all the technology we have. We are growing rapidly and so is the engineering of technology. Public schools are adding more technology into teaching, divers use the waterproof tablets and waterproof phones to record data or simply record a video, filmmakers use the top of the line, latest technology to make sure that their movie is and looks the best, and many more. Yes generations have survived without technology, but that is because they didn't have the resources, the ingenuity and simply the need that we have. To say "Generations have survived without technology before, so it isn't really a need" is not necessarily true because you have to look at the times and how it was back then and how it is now.
