Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
The Latest and Greatest
To most people having the latest and greatest is a need. In our society we depend so heavily on technology that some people don't know what they would do without it. While I do appreciate technology, and I would love to have the newest things, I don't believe that it is a NEED. Needs are things that we couldn't live without like water food and shelter. When comparing technology to those things it seems obvious that we don't really need technology to survive. In our day and age technology has made a lot of things easier, now instead of looking through a library of book to try and find out about a fact we can just type it into google and all all the sources are nicely sorted for us. Instead of using a road map to get to somewhere where you don't know how to go you can ask siri or type it into google maps and step by step instructions are voiced aloud to you. Its things like that that make it seem like technology is a want and in order to keep up you need to have the faster and better device but in reality we could live without it so its only a need.
Elizabeth, I agree with you on many points. Yes, technology is not a need. We don't need it to survive and would probably do better on many levels without it. Yet the examples you have chosen I do not completely agree with. The simple acts of technology as in: giving us directions or typing in a fact to google don't not limit us. Technology is limiting us in the act of social interaction. With all the ways to communicate without physical reaction it is putting a damper on our communities. Technology helps many ways and is somewhat needed to survive in our time. Maybe once we put so much stress off of technology people will realize it is indeed a want not a need. Yet if you are prepared to live in our society today, you have to understand technology. Somehow our twisted world is putting something with almost no importance to one of the highest importances, and we must notice and maybe even change this act.
