Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology as a want & a need

amyv

My name is Amy Vuong. I'm a student at Oakland Senior High School and I'm participating in this project for an assignment. When technology is produced, it requires materials such as silicon, neon, iron etc. This causes an increase in the quantity of raw material needed, which then causes soil degradation. When these digital items are produced, burning of fossil fuels occur. This increases the use of energy and the release of pollution due to the unburned carbon particles.

Cell phones is an example of technology as a necessity because it keeps us updated when there's a sudden business meeting or an after school activity. It also allows others to contact us when there's a case of an emergency or vice versa when we're in need of help. Now, do we need the Iphone 6 to fulfill this need? No, and that's where the want comes into play. Your old phone would have probably done fine, but by throwing it out simply because there's a new model, is unnecessary. In addition, any form of MP3 player or Ipod is all a want because you don't need music constantly playing in your ears.

T he next time you're tempted to buy an electronic device, stop and ask yourself, is it only because you want it? Only purchase items that you need, this is how you stop your addiction.
