Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Do we truly need technology?

MiaD

I think that we do need technology, but with limits. I do not think that we should have our whole lives revolving around it. Yes, technology does aid in our communication process, but it can also hinder it. One thing I have noticed is how some kids that our in close contact with each other don't even talk, they text. With the development of technology, there comes a higher rate of ignorance. In my opinion, people have become so captivated with their technology devices that they have lost the ability to physically communicate with others. I have also noticed a large amount of slang or texting lingo/acronyms,such as lol, used in everyday dialogue. However, I do understand how some people need technology. Some debatable examples are shown here: http://www.edutopia.org/technology-inte … importance

Technology really helps in saving the planet, though. For example, we use textbooks online to lessen paper usage and ink, and we print double sided if needed. Technology really simplifies things and it is what this society is based on. When I need to know something, I look it up on google, instead of going to the library- which saves paper (and lessens my time in the car). Technology helps in transportation, and we are gradually making transportation more eco-friendly. It helps a lot in communication, because before it took weeks to get mail and now it takes 30 seconds to receive a reply. It can help and hurt society, but I think it is helping more.http://minharoupasuaroupa.blogspot.com/ … ology.html here are some benefits of technology.

I agree to what both of you are saying. Technology is taking over and is making generation after generation more and more ignorant and anti-social. Although there is social media its not the same as going out with friends and meeting new people physically. yes, it is easy to request to follow someone on instagram, in as easy as a click you are "friends" but its not that easy face to face. Behind a computer screen, or a keyboard you have more confidence because you can basically hide your whole appearance and even become a totally different person. Those are just some negatives though, reflecting off of what was said, technology is also very beneficial and helpful In a lot of ways. Online work saves paper and buying books online prevents using gas to drive to the library and also saves time. Technology is a blessing and a curse.

I personally have noticed that when I hang out with certain friends, they are on their phone most of the time. In between food breaks or game breaks, they always take out their phone to do whatever they must. The thing is, it doesn't actually interrupt the time we spend together. Sure, friend A is on their phone, but they seem to pay attention to every detail around them and we are still able to have fun.

Also, there may have been no use for technology in the past because everyone was too preoccupied with surviving to do any criminal acts against children. However, now that life is much easier and the survival rate is much higher, there are a lot more people with mental health issues who can be a danger to not just us teenagers, but everyone. This is why technology is needed to this extent, why all the other features were added to technology, such as games and chatting sites and pictures, are needed do not have anything to do with the earths health or our safety.

Technology refers to every machine that humans have ever created. We wouldn't have the ability to slow down the rate carbon is being released into the atmosphere if it weren't for technology. Texting is only a small part of technology. You are correct about how genration after generation is becoming more and more anti-social. However, you are forgetting that technology has allowed us to see how much carbon we are releasing into the atmosphere and make changes to slow down this process.

I think we need tecnology but we are using it to much. We need tecnology for medical reasons and emergencies, but we use it to much like texting and playing vidio games all the time. If we use less tecnology it may reduce are carbon foot print. If we don't need the latest phone the transportation amount would decrease.

I believe we do not need technology as a means for surviving. Our human species has survived thousands of years without it. Technology does improve our sate of lives but it also affects them negatively. Technology is like a drug, too much can create serious disasters and a little or the right amount can give positive results. Without technology we would be behind in our evolution... Technology has a spectrum from the wheel to the iPhone. I would love it if we went back to the age of no computers, no phones (just a home phone)... Technology is bad when it allows people to start living in a virtual world. Technology has improved the human life tremendously through medicine, economics and etc. Although we are trying to cover up and fix mistakes old technology did in the past, we have newer and safer technology that can do a lot of good. The only thing i hate about technology now-a-days is how it can act like a drug and ruin peoples lives, making people dependable on it.

I completely agree that we need technology, but in moderation. Technology has lead to many scientific and medical breakthroughs, but too much of it can actually hurt us. I know my doctor always says to limit technology time because it affects my brain. I feel like as teenagers, we need to start distancing ourselves from technology because we always seem to be stuck to it. My last thought is that moderation is key. If we have little technology, then we are not safe. If we have too much technology, we can get hurt.

Most people think of technology as cellphones or medical devices, but it is actually more broad than that. Technology is the application of sciences to everyday use. Pens, pencils, and paper are all technology. The glass you drink out of is a piece of technology, the sidewalk, chair, and swimming pool are all pieces of technology. Yes, some pieces of technology are redundant, nuclear bombs, video game consoles, cigarettes, and many other things aren't necessary in order for the human race to survive. But many other things are.

Technology has made it easier for the human race to survive. Cars and airplanes make it easier to travel, cellphones  make communicating with each other faster, and medical advances help us survive. Some technology is not needed, but most of it is beneficial to our survival.
