Do We Really Need that Mani-Pedi?

KristinF

It’s Saturday morning and I am exhausted from a chaotic week at school, so I go to the nail salon. This probably sounds about right for a teenage girl who is under the stress of school, and loves feeling pampered. Going to the nail salon for some of us, may seem harmless: the massaging chairs, the bubbling water, and the calming music. What's wrong with that? But, have you ever thought about what is inside the glass polish containers ? We are too focused choosing the colors of our next mani-pedi to notice a very important detail. When you walk into a nail salon, you automatically get hit with a strong pungent smell. This would be the odor of chemicals. According to the article posted at the bottom, there are three toxic chemicals in nail polish. Even in the polishes labelled “nontoxic,” there are three toxic chemicals. These are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl pthlatate. These chemicals are harmful towards your reproductive hormones, affect the nervous system, and can cause cancer. Not only are we putting these chemicals on our nails, but we are inhaling the chemicals  directly into our body every time we step into a nail salon. There are polishes like OPI, Honeybee Gardens, and Aquarella which are free of all three toxins. One way you can improve your health, as well as the air quality, is to use these chemical-free polishes. Keeping the air well- ventilated is another way, but it doesn't stop the fumes from reaching our atmosphere. This increases the growing problem of global warming. The best solution to this problem besides not using nail polish, would be  using natural nail polishes that are better for you and the environment. Next time you go to the nail salon try to stay truly nontoxic. This may mean bringing your own eco-friendly polish to the salon, or doing your nails at home.

I love this! It's so true. We get really caught up in what to get at the nail salon that we don't even think about what the reason for the smell is. http://www.supergreenme.com/go-green-en … -Nail-Care has some more reasons why this leisure activity is harming the environment. I'm not saying that we should never paint our nails, but I suggest considering all the healthier alternatives. The article also includes extra tips for getting involved with this change. I think that girls should take time to read what it has to say. It might just change your mind and your plans this weekend...
