The Government's Role

juliat1

The US still hasn't taken much initiative to limit it's CO2 emissions. It feels as if we (The US) aren't taking global warming very seriously, relative to other countries. This is outrageous considering that in 2003, the average US household produced 59 tons of Carbon Dioxide, and the households of other countries produced only 9.5 tons. But don't blame yourself! In many of the "greener" countries, their governments are making the effort to prevent further Global Warming. Our government seems to do very little in that field. The government has an obligation to stop corporations from releasing too much greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, and yet, many people feel that they are avoiding these obligations. However, people are attempting to put an end to this ignorance. In 2011, a legal campaign began which was based on the "public trust doctrine." The Public Trust Doctrine stated that the government was responsible for protecting citizens, and future generations, from climate change. Mary Christina Wood wrote a book called Natures Trust: Environmental Law for a New Ecologic al Age, which laid out these ideas in a more legal perspective. It highlights the people's right to act out against the government for avoiding their duties, and encourages the government to take part in the climate change issue. However, Wood predicts that courts will not enforce these ideal rules upon the government.
I, personally, believe that strong leadership could have a very positive effect on our efforts to prevent further global warming. If the government makes an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the country will follow. The government should use its power and capability to protect the posterity of this country. By making simple reforms in certain areas they can achieve terrific results.
