Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or Needs?
My name is Calvin Cheung and I'm a student from Oakland High. Most technology is created from many things, when those things are used, they need to create more which causes more CO2. It affects all of us, as years go by, we get more and more, and create more and more CO2. Technology is a need and a want. We want to be able to text our friends, get the latest product and be like everyone else. Sometimes we actually need to have technology, to keep us updated on the latest news, or need the technology to do certain things.
Cool idea man, this is a good example of technology use in 2014, this is exactly what we teens do and we don't really know about the CO2 levels involved in this.
I think people don't really have the need to constantly buy products day by day. I also believe that it makes a strong impact on us have a larger carbon footprint. The more we buy the more they produce and the leads to more carbon and it affect us greatly.
This is a great idea man honestly I think this is true. Technology is wonderful but the only down side is that it creates C02 and that is bad/
I'm pretty sure we don't need most of the things we buy. We don't need the new phone or the new pc, so why do we always buy them even if we don't need them?!
I think we do it because have the best objects it's like saying "I'm the best too" or easily "I'm not different from the others". For example have the new iPhone it's like a "status symbol". We don't need it but if we don't have the last technology or if we don't wear the wright clothes we're almost afraid of what other people would say. I'm not saying everybody have this opinion, but too many people have these fears and this is quiet sad. We need a phone, we need clothes, we obviously need food and we need a lot of other things, but we don't need to be influenced by the society and to increase consumerism just to prove we can be part of it.
We as humans are consumers and constantly buying newer products to stay in style or to show-off in a way. A cell-phone may work perfectly fine but we see the latest gadget on a commercial or in stores and we tell ourselves that we want it but do we really need it? No. People need to realize the environmental costs these products are causing by not recycling the correct way and some of these take years and years to degrade and can create emissions not healthy towards the atmosphere and ourselves.
A phone gives a lot of advantages to a user. The list of the advantages is rather long: phones give us access to the Internet. You can spread a lot of photoes and stories. You can enter the chat room with other Internet users and debate urgent problems on line. And so on.
Today phones help people to do many things. For example , you can communicate with your friends
(1) Telephones are needs . We can argue with me , but I think that I say true things.
(2)I rarely get new phones(
(3)I want a new model . Because it is cool.
(4) It is can a bad influence the environment . But in my opinion , people can't live without telephones.
(5) And some words about about addiction.
Helping a child or teen with smartphone addiction.
Some versions. 1. Be a good role model. 2.Use apps to monitor and limit your child’s smartphone use. 3 Encourage other interests and social activities. 4.Talk to your child about underlying issues. 5. Get help.
good job
Very cool
Children compare wants and needs and create a list of wants and needs. Students clarify their understanding and interpretation of wants and needs they compare their wants and needs with others who around and in the world. Children begin to think about how they can help people who have different needs, but they can not carry them out
great post
Yes, it is true that many students within this discussion will not take action once this discussion board is closed. Yet, I do not think that we should generalize all children and assume that none of us will implement any sort of change following this discussion. I know that I have tried to minimize my technology use and consumption and have participated in and helped organize E-waste drives through the Students for Sustainability Club at our school. Despite assumptions that our generation is complacent, I think that many of us will take the information gained through this discussion to make positive change. For example, children have been taking action to sue the federal government over failure to act to combat climate change: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mas … cc9a70b23c
If any other students want to look towards what we from Bishop O'Dowd are doing to be more sustainable I have provided the link on our school's website: http://www.bishopodowd.org/values/susta … epartment/

Even though technology has become a vital part of most peoples' lives, I see having the latest model of iPhone as pretty useless. It is a nice thing to have, I admit, but an outdated model can work just as well as one that came out a few days ago if you take proper care of it. It's actually better to keep your older models as long as they're working, since throwing them away means that they end up in landfills where their toxic parts, such as metals in their batteries, can cause environmental problems.
People are becoming more and more materialistic, and that is why they feel the need to have all the latest gadgets... Nobody really needs a new phone if their old one still works,
It's in human nature to always want something bigger and better. But, what makes us unique on this planet is the ability to control that urge. However, if we don't do so, we might destroy everything that truly matters to us. Just think about that, right now you are sitting in the warm comfort of your own home which provides you shelter, food and love. Sadly, some people don't even have that. But, you have the power to preserve that for the next generations. What would your grandchildren think if they knew that you had the power to save the one home that shelters everything alive? What would they think if they knew that you have given it all up for a few new gadgets? We must learn to be happy with what we have, not want.
As humans, we all want something, but is it the same as needing something? No, it is not. If you think of what you truly need, needing something would be like food, water, shelter, and some basic things like clothes. However, when people want something it would be like a $100 jordans, which is very unnecassary, but it fills our satisfactory. These contribute to climate change. It's time to save our planet by buying fewer things you want, but instead what you truly need. Fight the urge to buy the next jordans, the new phones etc. Because its time to save our planet.
Having something that you want is nice. But do you really need it? It's normal to want something, but you need to know what is a need or a want. You need food and water which is two of your needs that you need to live. You also want a new phone but that is going to cost resources and adding to your carbon footprint. You realize that you don't need it because you can reuse your old phone that works perfectly fine. If you are addicted to buying your wants, just think about the endangered animals that are struggling to survive just because you bought your new phone. That should make you feel a little guilty. I'm the the type of person that tries not to buy as much needs and tend to reuse more.
Everybody wants stuff. But most of the time that "stuff" isn't really necessary for their human survival. Usually its a new phone or some newer version of a thing that they already have. These "wants" that we all have is causing a lot of impacts on the environment. That 1 year old model of a PC you threw away for a newer version probably ended up in a landfill somewhere half way across the world. Simply put, the choices most of us make when purchasing things are probably not very good. We waste a lot of resources that could have been used by someone else. We can combat this by thinking more about our purchases and how much you actually need it. Is it necessary for your survival? If not then you probably dont need it.
In today’s society, we all want more, even if we don’t exactly need it. What distinguishes a want or need? Needs are things we need in order to live; like food and water. Wants are things we don't necessarily need to survive, but we just want to have. It's almost as if we've been taught to buy or get whatever we want, when in reality, we don't need it. More specifically, technology. Is it a need, or a want? While some people may disagree, in my opinion it is a want. If in past generations humans have survived without having a cellphone with them 24/7, why can’t today’s society function without one? What has changed that people now think “I need my phone to live”? Some forms of technology are useful and important. For example, without technology, we wouldn’t have found cures for diseases, successful surgery methods, ways to teach and learn new subjects, etc. Technology has, in some aspects, helped us thrive, but for some people, it has become an addiction. When with friends, everyone has their phone out and instead of talking they’d rather stare at a screen. It seems as i f we’ve been influenced into thinking that phones/technology is a “need”, and getting the latest phone, for instance, is a must-have. Is having hundreds of games and social media apps necessary? I think not. We should all try and get out of the mindset that we “need” our phones. Although it would take a while to get used to, if I had to give up my phone, I would do it without hesitation and I would be fine without it. Everyone should try going on their phones and computers less and only use them when it’s important. To some, technology (in this case, cell phones) has turned into a need when really it is a want.
We all assume that we need technology, but in reality you could need it or you may even want it. We all always want a new model of a Iphone, Android, Samsung and even if you a new model you might just need one l. I never considered the environmental impact on what the phone does to our mother ship (Earth). I can break my addiction by using my phone for important things or using it less. How could you stop your addiction of using your phone so much. Did you ever consider that you may not need a phone or want one. But why need an electronic to speak or text to someone. Now you could talk to people or even write letters but really in my opinion no one wants to write letters or speak to someone in person. Some people might agree with me of needing a phone and some might disagree on wanting a phone and they would say i need a phone to live i can't live without it.
I think that having the latest technology is a want. It is a want because, for example if you have an iphone 6s, but the iphone 7 comes out, you may want to buy the newer one. You don’t need the iphone 7 because you already have a phone and you think that having the newest and latest technology will some what make you popular. Having new technology is not a necessity and you won’t die if you're without it. I also do think that it is extremely unhealthy for the earth and the earth’s atmosphere for lots and lots of people to have the electronic that don't break down. Where do the phones go after people are done with them and no one wants them? I’m sure they go some where in the earth and destroy an environment.
Having the technology is a want. Having the latest update of a phone, or having any updated electronic is not a necessity. Having a phone is simply a want. For example if you have a phone you plan to use it everyday. When you get a phone you are not really thinking of what it could possibly do to the environment. When you use a phone it is using electricity. If you are “addicted” to using your phone, there could be ways to stop and put the phone down when it's not a necessary time to use it. You could turn it completely off during night time or right before you go to bed. Doing little things like that could cut down the electricity use.
I think this is a great description of wants vs needs of technology!
