Considering the Environmental Impact of Purchases
I definitely do not think that I take into account the environmental impact of my purchases enough. Though I try to use all my devices until they no longer function, I do not consider the negative effects to the environment when I buy more electronics. In “The Human and Environmental Effects of E-Waste,” an article by the Population Reference Bureau, environmental studies Ph.D. Lucy McAllister states that 40 million tons of electronic waste are produced every year. McAllister explains that toxic particles that the e-waste releases can cause many different health problems, from cardiovascular disease to neurological disorders and respiratory problems. Furthermore, e-waste toxins, which are not biodegradable, can enter crops through the soil. This goes to show how toxins that e-waste emits not only harm the environment, but also harm us directly. I think that if people were more aware of e-waste’s detrimental affects to people and the environment, they would not be as quick to buy the latest devices. Perhaps if this information was spread throughout schools, students would reduce their electronic purchases.
