Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Wants and Needs
Everything starts as a Want and then in the right circumstances turns into a Need. For example cellphones and computers started as a Want.People thought that it would be good if we could speak while we are moving and have a computer to make some things easier. It started as a Want, people bought it because it was new and innovative and it turned itself into a Need.Today you can't do business or even can't function properly in the social life without a cellphone or a computer. The problem is that some things that pollute the environment have become a Need, like transportation vehicles, they emit carbon dioxide and contribute to the greenhouse problem but today we need to be able to get from one place to another as fast as possible. Most of technology starts as a Want and later turns into a Need.
I totally agree with your idea. But I think in 21 century, the people is becoming more and more greedy. People want many things they do not have. You are right, the cell phone and computer help us a lot today, and I also use computer to communicate with you. And I also agree that we need cell phone and computer. But not at all, the latest technology is not a need. Because you have already had a phone to call now, and you do not need a new iphone 6 to call. That is not a need, that is a want. And this is just my personal opinion, so if I said something not good, I apologize to you. Have a nice day! : )
I agree that technology can start as a want and evolve into a need, such as with computers in that people often need computers now at school and at work. I also agree that people are definitely becoming more dependent on devices such as cell phones and computers. However, just because having a smart phone may be important for staying connected with social media, I do not think that this justifies smart phones becoming a need. In some cases, it is necessary to have a cell phone. For example, when I was younger, I would go by myself to sports practice after school and I would need to have a phone with me in case anything happened or in case I needed to reach my parents. Though in some cases like this one it might be necessary for people to have cell phones, having the most technologically advanced cellular devices is definitely not necessary in my opinion. I think it is interesting how you said that people cannot function properly without a cell phone. I think this goes to show how culture has started to really revolve around these devices, which makes it seem like it is n ecessary to always have the latest device in order to keep up with society. In the Huffington Post article, “The Impact of Cell Phones on Psychology, Community, Culture, Arts and Economics,” Jim Luce describes how cell phones have “become an integral part of people’s lives” and that this reliance on mobile devices has completely transformed culture. This transformation of culture to revolve around mobile devices and social media definitely makes the desire of having the newest smart phone seem more like a need.
