Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Individuals wanting or needing the latest technology can depend on the brand and the year it was manufactured. In many instances the newer model that is being purchased usually have minor differences in options with a more chic style to be more appealing. There have been a couple times that my cellphone started experiencing technical issues and I was forced to get a new phone. Having an older model phone is technically not a bad things as long as it works and I still receive updates it's like a new phone again!

When purchasing a cellphone the negative environmental impact does not cross my mind. I know that cellphones are made with some our natural resources. The biggest impact that is affecting out environment when it comes to cellphone's or mp3 players is how we dispose of them. Many employers have "Go Green" areas in the workplace to encourage employees to bring batteries, cellphone and many other items to be disposed of properly. I am now where near being a new technology addict, but I can still do my part to help save the environment. Adjustments such as recycling  non-functional cellphones and mp3 players properly, or simply hand them down to younger family members if they are functional.

I agree with about how an older phone is not bad. I have never owned the most up to date phone and that is fine with me, it works and that's all I need! My first phone was my sisters hand me down until that stopped working and I got a new phone, it was new to me but not the newest model. When I dropped that one I was again forced to get a new phone. I do need to look into disposing of my old broken phone. I have not yet done anything with it. I will look into a way to recycle my phone as to try and be as eco-friendly as I can.

I too forget to think about my environmental impact when it comes to purchasing technology, it just need something and I go out and buy it. However, I do try and only get what I need. I think that technology can be an amazing and helpful tool, after all it is allowing all of us to talk, but it can become and addiction for those who feel they need the newest addition when it comes out. It is important to be mindful of the impact that those purchases have as well as finding a way to properly dispose of them when they are no longer of use.
