Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Technology
My little brother is addicted to his video games. He will moan and complain if he does not get his way. Now, I’m not sure if my parents are just raising him differently that they did with me or if I actually was that bad, but it’s terrible. I see it all over with younger kids. They become so dependent on screens (I say ironically as I type on a computer) that they can’t take in everything else that is going on around them. I know that the world is changing and people do almost everything electronically now, but it is always good to have a sense of relativity. I think a lot of the younger generation will learn about all the inequalities around the world, and hopefully many will act. But as for now, it seems like all they want to do is be on screens as much as possible.
I think these types of wants do take away from needs. Not only do they block kids off from direct social interaction and distract them from other, more important activities like school, but these wants also set unrealistic expectations for the kids. I think that is a huge problem, for we see tec hnology as a privilege because we did not always have it, but for the younger generations it is norm. I am sure there is a bit of bias in this post, but at the same time, it seems that a fixation and wants and not being realistic is harming many kids.
I agree with what you said. Although some of the younger generation may not be addicted to their electronics, a lot of them definitely are. Even though this might seem like a bad thing, I think they have the potential to do great things and use their technological knowledge to problem-solve and fix some of society's problems. They have somewhat of an advantage over older generations because they have been introduced to technology at a young age and will be extremely skilled at it in the future. They can use these skills to solve problems and help society when they are older. However I agree that at the same time it can be a harmful thing and it limits their social activities. I think children should be encouraged to play outside and with their friends instead of sitting inside all day on their electronics. I understand that in some situations this is not possible, but it would be extremely beneficial to them if they could find some time to go outside or play.
