Technology: A False Necessity
In our day and age, it is easy to get caught up in the steep evolution of technology. For instance, every time a new Apple product comes out, our society almost claws at it in fervent desperation, perceiving it as a necessity opposed to the nonessential luxury it really is. This, in part, is due to the growing popularity of cell phones and electronic devices. This increasing demand only further facilitates a need for these products, as no one wants to be stuck in the past while the rest of our generation moves forward into the technological future. This creates a vicious cycle. In some ways, having the latest technology can be seen as a need. We, as a culture, have grown so reliant on our devices that it seems we can't function properly without them. For instance, my 6-year old brother is never caught without an iPad or iPhone in his hands. He has grown up in an era where this behavior is accepted, encouraged even, by those around him. He observes commercials and advertisements on a daily basis that promote the use of technology in all aspects of life. Personally, I try to be more conscious of my device usage. I get a new phone once every few years, and only when the model or device I have is completely broken or malfunctioning. I do try to remain aware of the environmental impact of these purchases, and recently read in an article from treehugger.com that 65,000 tons of electronic garbage is produced from cell phones alone each year. This number is frankly appalling. I do not feel addicted to my phone, as there are some occasions where a whole day can pass without me feeling the need to look at it or be on it, but I constantly observe so many of my friends taking the opposite approach to their cell phones. Therefore, I strongly urge our society to curtail their cell phone usage, as it only inspires a false necessity and negative impact on our precious environment.
