Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology Addiction
Getting a new phone is something I really look forward to. I upgrade my cell phone about every two years or more depending on if there is a new model available. It is not necessary to get a new model, but when given the opportunity to upgrade, I will. For me, technology is a need, but upgrading is a want. Also, it is necessary to upgrade to a new model sometimes because older models may not be supported by newer software or because of accidents. Before getting my carbon footprint results, I haven’t considered the environmental impact of upgrading my phone. I can decrease my carbon footprint by not charging my phone unless it is necessary and not having wi-fi or cellular data on when I am not using my phone. I would consider myself somewhat addicted to technology so it would be hard for me to compromise to decrease my carbon footprint. I can possible break my addiction by occupying my time with activities that don’t involve technology. I know that my technology use has a large impact on my carbon footprint, but it is also something that is hard for me to change or decrease.
Any other suggestions for decreasing my technology use?
Hi Angelica, first, the fact that you are aware of what is a want and what is a need in your constant back and fourth with technology, stands on it own as a huge benefit and standing point on how to progress. While this may not help you right now, I think that one of the most important things humanity can do progressing forward is not necessarily eliminating the basis of technology and reducing all together, rather, finding a way to make technology more sustainable. If it did not affect the environment whether you upgraded or not then it would not even be an issue for this discussion, and we should make it our goal to get to a place were we can proceed like that.
