Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Is Driving a Want?

annmariepiek

There are over one billion cars globally. Most of the one billion cars are probably used everyday. When something is so common it is hard for people to think there might be something wrong with it, that it is a want not a need. We do not need to drive our own car everyday when there are buses, carpools, even walking or cycling in some situations. There are predicted to be 2.5 billion cars in 2050. We need to realize driving our own cars everyday is a want and we have to use other modes of transportation or carpools to help the environment.

In the US many of us think that cars are the only way we can travel from one place to the other. We could learn a lot from other countries. Also, is there any reason we couldn't switch to electric cars and then power those cars solely from electricity generated from solar cells on the roofs of our homes and work places? We do need to work on better batteries, & I've heard some Stanford students have an idea for that. http://news.stanford.edu/news/2015/octo … 00115.html

Hi : ) I am EMILY from China. I think you have a great explanation on wants and needs. It's true that we, human being, will usually assume something we do everyday as a proper and harmless thing, we might become addicted to that things and gradually feel if we don't have that it is the end of the world. However, that thing is just a want sometimes and we can still live our life without that thing. Private Cars and cell phones are just a want, we use that to increase the quality of our life, but nowadays many youth use it too much and become addicted to that and that will drive the world to a serious problem.

I definitely agree! People use cars all the time when they are not needed. You could always carpool with friends that leave nearby or even walk to places that aren't very far. Carpooling saves you money, and helps the environment in many ways.

It is a need in some ways because for transportation you need to drive to your destination but a want because you can transport yourself in a bus or taxi and pollite less by producing less gasses
