Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or Needs? >

It depends

For most people, having the latest technology is a want. We are influenced by the commercials and feel obsolete about carrying around last year's iPhone, but deep inside we know that we were fine with the old one. Our life's necessities don't change this quickly from year to year. We don't really need to always be updating our models. On the other hand, there are those who use an incredible amount of electronics to build electronics and for their jobs. To truly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the field of engineering would have to accept a significant amount of limitations. Most countries and most people, myself included, are not willing to sacrifice this human source of greenhouse gas emissions. it's off the table, because it would automatically have negative consequences of the quality of our lives and on the country's development in general. This is why so many countries have difficulties making laws that completely change our way of living: it is much easier to simply "patch" some of the danger we're causing with small changes which, in a country like Switzerland an d on the global scale, won't make such a huge difference. My views are quite pessimistic.
In conclusion, I would say that being up to date and always receiving the most recent models of phones and mp3 players is definitely a want, but having different electronics, which we have become so addicted to historically, is a need. The latter is a form of addiction which is hard to get rid of, because it's not unhealthy and because without these electronics we would be more limited in our numerous activities. This is a very hard message to take in, for us as singular individuals, as well as for us as a society. We would have to change our whole mentality, but it would be hard to do so before we change the environment. From a more positive standpoint, i can say that I still hold an ember of hope and of faith in humanity: t would be perfect to channel all our means of propaganda and mass human information for the pursuit of this goal: the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
