Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Human's Wants

emmapusa

Shortly after my class started to learn about climate change, I decided to write my informative speech about it for my communication application class. The things I learned about human's greenhouse gas emissions were quite shocking. In total, about 75kg CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) is produced from the transport, production, and use of the iPhone 5s's. That's 75 kilograms of carbon dioxide put out into our environment just from phones. In reality, these phones are close to useless. The CO2e would be much less if people did not use their phones as much. Many people (myself included) rarely use their phones to actually call and speak to someone. Smartphones are mainly used now for social media and unnecessary texting. If we just stuck to using our phones to call only when necessary and if we stopped discarding perfectly good phones for new versions, our environment would thank us.

i agree with you. phone use and production releases too much carbon into the environment. i believe that phone use also takes away from human interaction and makes it harder for people to talk face to face. i think its better to go outside and exercise than to spend ours on your phone and being less productive.

i definitely can see your points here. Also, while we use cell phones for unnecessary texting and social media, this results in having to charge phones more. Most people leave their phones charging over night and charge them a few times during the day as well. This seems to be a waste of electricity and impacts your carbon footprint. So I agree, if we could all reduce our usage of cell phones, it could reduce time spent charging our cell phones, and in theory, reduce our carbon footprints. Great post!

I see your point here, and i agree that we should be using our cell phones less, but i think the real problem is what Emma mentioned first; our consistency of  buying new phones. Every time we buy a new phone, another one is created, it's simple supply and demand. So I think with a strong will power and fewer obsessions with phones, we can reduce the production of phones

How many times have you seen groups of people sitting together, but instead of talking to each other they are surfing the web?

emmapusa

Too often I've seen this happen, and I am also guilty of it! And it's great that you've pointed out the charging fact, Abby. This is very true, and apparently, charging our phones more than it really needs to be can lower the battery life and waste energy at the same time.

I agree with your points and stress your point about buying new phones. It has been pushed on to us that we continually have to keep getting the newest version of the latest phone or tablet. If we don't buy the latest version of something, we are different from the people around us and a little bit left out and that is what phone companies use against us. We as humans always want the next best thing and forget to see that we are content with the things we have now. The manufacturing of phones is a problem and we should be finding ways to solve that, but right now we just need to realize that phones are not the most important thing and we could be putting our money and time somewhere else.

I completely agree with you. I can't understand people that don't speak each other. I think that this happens only because a person have prejudices about the other. Today we use more the phone than in the past, also because the prices are gone down and, today, if we buy a new phone with subscription it cost quite nothing. I mean that people are using phones  not for important things but for irrelevant things.

It's a great website to share your opinion about the world. What's else you can discover a lot of things about the contamination. I discovered that I create a lot of rubbish and I'm trying treat better the world.

I agree with you, now people use their phones too much and you need it to charge it more, so we waste more energy. The problem is society, it seems like you need to be constantly connected to the internet, posting photos, sharing your whole life to the rest of the world on the internet and we don't really need that. We neither need to get a new phone every year just because there is a newer version.
