Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint.

Kalolar

My total footprint is 9290 kgs of CO2 per year, compared to
an average of 2338 kgs for China, and 3791 kg (= 8358 lb) worldwide.

fyang

I feel that amount of carbon I use was very surprising.According to this data what I can do to lower my carbon use through recycling the materials that can be and reduce the high energy stuff using. And from my data of carbon using is obviously higher that the average of china.

sydney_huntley

Name: Sydney
From: Mooresville, North Carolina, USA
Age: 15
My carbon footprint was 10,208 kgs. This is below the average carbon footprint for North Carolina but around the average. The majority of my footprint came from food. My results were about what I thought they were going to be but I thought the majority would be on transportation. I learned that I should help to reduce my carbon footprint, especially when it comes to food such as eating more locally grown foods.

Your carbon footprint is actually really good below your close to average.

Hello.I have many thoughts on how to make a change in our carbon footprints. For an example, lets talk about home. We all forget about lights in our house. Most people leave one light bulb on for more than 3.5 hours. Everyone including myself can make sure to turn off lights in a room once they leave a room. Also, taking longer showers will make a change in our carbon footprints. On average, a person takes approximately 8.2 minutes in the shower. During that time, we use about 17.2 gallons of water. I think we can make a change in our carbon foot prints by not taking as long of showers.

Hello. I have many thoughts about how we can change our carbon footprint. I am going to talk about purchases. We all buy things (or we make our parents buy it) that we don't necessarily need. One way I can make my carbon footprint decrease is to buy less expensive clothing, or anything I purchase. Including my self, we all think we need the best of anything we buy. Another way i can decrease my carbon footprint buy purchasing things is to buy things I would actually need. An average American household spends about 3.8 % of their income on clothing. Instead of buying things that I will probably will only use one or two times, I can use my money wisely and buy things that I will use daily. That is how I can make a change in my carbon footprint by purchasing things.

Well it is good that it is average rather than above average, maybe start giving your unwanted things to other people rather than throwing it away.

jonathonlambert4560

Maybe you should use less water and tun the lights off sometimes. But it looks great.

1017301

My advice would be to turn lights off more because 3 hours at a time is a long time.

You can make sure you turn off all the lights in your house and unplug unnecessary items plugged in to the wall using energy.

SierraCall

I agree 100% with you because I think that we should turn off the lights when we leave the room because when you leave the lights on you are just racking up the electricity.
And if you have stuff that is plugged in that you are not using then you should unplug it because it is racking up our electricity also could get solar lights or you could just open the curtains so the lights comes into the house.
And you should take shorter showers because the longer you are in the shower the more you are wasting waterSome people just use the water to warmer themselves up and that's wasting the water
there are 6 people that live in my house and when we all take showers.
We are using a lot of water everyday we have to take a shower and we all take about 10 minutes and sometimes we have to wait to take showers because there some times will be 2 people will be taking a shower at the same time so the water will be really slow and cold.

My carbon footprint was 8,557 kgs. Home: 3,864 kgs. Food: 2,159 kgs. Purchases 353 kgs. Transportation: 2,181 kgs.

logi_jokulsson

My carbon footprint was much lower than the average person in Iceland. My home category was pretty much the same as the average. My food was rather high which took my by surprise. My purchases were about 9 times lower than the average since I don't really buy much except food and occasionally new peripheral for my PC. My transportation was about 4 times lower than the average since I usually walk or use my bike to get to places. My town is not that large so driving is mostly unnecessary.

daneltryggvigurnarson

My carbon footprint was a little bit lower than the average person.
My home category was a lot higher than the average home, but the food category was a lot lower, and purchases were to high which does not come as a surprise. In the transportation category i was four times higher than the average person in iceland and i did expect that because travel alot and use a car for short distances.

saramargret

My carbon footprint was a little bit over average. I have to ride my own car when I go to school because I live 45km from the school and the bus system in Iceland is not good in the small towns. I can´t take more people with me in my car because there is nobody that lives in my town that is in the same school. I can´t So what can I do? well I can have the lights in my home turned off until the daylight goes away. I could recycle more and throw less food away. I could also take shorter showers.

hodin

Dear Sara, yes,it is very difficult for many people to avoid burning fuel while driving, when there is no good public transit.  I agree with you- the best things you can do have to do with your other choices, things that you can change.  For a lot of people their diet choices are a big part of the footprint.  How about your food footprint?

...and I see your other comment about traveling!  Airplanes have a very big footprint.  One way you can still travel away from Iceland and still reduce your footprint is to take *one* flight to somewhere and then take the train or bus when you get there.

So if you are traveling to Europe, you can fly to Frankfurt and take the really good train system from there to your different destinations.

morganv

My carbon foot print was lower that I expected compared to the average of 9,727 kgs for California, United States. But, the biggest benefactor to this was my "Transportation", it was way higher than its average. How can I lower it? Should I only ride public transportation? Or should I just switch it up once in a while.

lukeousabod1sr

Hi Morgan,
There are many reasons why transportation can be so high. One reason is being a frequent flying. While flying might be a necessity for vacation/visiting relatives, it can quickly add onto your carbon footprint.  Airplanes alone make up roughly three percent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. If airplanes were considered as a country, it would rank easily in the top 10 of carbon dioxide emitters. One potential way to lower your carbon dioxide emission for transportation is to carpool or take the bus to school. I recommend making public transportation as a primary option, but not an everyday option. Perhaps you can make it a goal to use public transportation/carpool three out of five times to get to school.

hermana21

I agree that it can be difficult if there is no other way to get to school. If your transportation can't be lowered much, I would suggest trying to make sure you have a lower footprint for other things such as having local clothes, fluorescent lights, and organic foods.

jelenapuzak

My carbon footprint was also a little bit over average.
it surprised me. Especially because I did not expect that a 15-minute drive to the school every day (with a car)  can do so much damage. Also, in my household, we spend much more electricity than we need, and that is something that should be changed as soon as possible.

hanazimbrek

My  carbon footprint was actually average and that suprised me a little bit because I think that there are still a lot of things that I can do different, on example walk more rather then driving with car

dongkim

My name is Dong and i'm a Korean boy, i'm 12 years old and carbon footprint is over 9000 i think i forgot but about that number, lol. Give me some help i need to increase my number to destroy the environment, just kidding i want to reduce it because i love environment. ANSWER!

dongkim

helpp me please!!!
