Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Buying wants versus needs

Buying things that we want instead of things we need can add to our carbon footprint. For example, a need would be water, food, or shelter, where as a want would be the latest technology. Constantly buying what is new and "in" instead of just buying things that we need, creates more c02 emissions.

I agree, buying what we want is creating a bigger carbon footprint, for example, having the new car just because it is new and you want another car. Where things that we need are water, food, shelter, and other things to keep up healthy. According to an article, needs are things you have to have something that you can't do without. A want is something you would like to have rather than have to have, In the article it also said that not all food is a need only the food that has nutrients like vegetables and fruits. Dessert type foods is a want not a need.

I agree, wants vs. needs is a big issue in today's world. Many people feel the pressure to buy something that is fashionable or popular. They might not need the product but want it. Eventually people start to want more and more things, which can negatively impact our environment and our carbon footprint. The only things that we really need are basics like water, food, shelter, and clothing. Many things that people crave are new technology like iphones and computers. People should be investing their money into other technology like solar panels which can benefit our world and environment.

I agree with all of you people. By definition, want means to have a desire to possess something. That something could be the new I-Phone, laptop, trending clothes, cars, etc. Buying these things will increase our carbon footprint exponentially. Many people don't need the latest technology but rather, they want it to show off. Another reason why they want these items is because other people might have them and they want to match/be equal with the others. But I think we should prioritize our needs over our wants.
