Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

For typical everyday use, technology is a want. However, it becomes a need when immediate communication is necessary. For example, in case of an emergency, having a phone is pertinent in order to access the proper resources to solve the problem. I have had the same cell phone for the past three years. While it would be helpful to get the latest model, I do not need it.
