Having technology has become a necessity in the world today. So many people have phones and email addresses that not having one is a legitimate liability. Without a phone, it is much more difficult to contact someone, and an employer might not be able to get to you if there is something they need to be done. Having a phone also allows you to be reachable at any time, and this expectation of instant communication is so ingrained into society that being the one person who can't be reached in a moment's notice can result in unfortunate consequences. However, having the newest phone is purely a need. The drive to be on the forefront of technology and have the newest, fastest phone is more of a personal choice than a necessity, and this is a culture of wastefulness that needs to be acknowledged more.
