Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Last generation's phone

mirco98

Hi, I am Mirco and I go to school in Switzerland, in Lugano.
In my opinion, in the most of the cases buying a last generation's phone isn't a need but a want, because many times I use the phone only for messages and for calling people. I use new technologies  of my cell very little so I think that buying the last cell released is a bit useless in my case. I change phone every three years and I think I'm not very addicted!!

Hey Mirco, I agree with you about the phone, and for everything related to technology. But the problem isn't just the technology, in fact, just think of the pants, shoes, clothing and more.Any object for sale, today, Its  price depends on the brand that brings. There are many example! Another topic is the food. More specifically just think of the big fast-food, which produce a lot of CO2. All this to return to the discourse of the brand, which decides the price of the product. The "victims" of all this are us that we spend a lot more than it really is worth a particular product!

I think that you have a good outlook on cell phones. I agree with you that they are overused and that getting a new phone each season is quite useless. I have had my current phone for 3 years now, it doesn't work as great as it did when I first got it but it is not a crappy phone by any means. The desire to get a new phone is all because of the fad of having the latest and greatest. We need to take a step back from that and watch how we are using the resources we have instead of trying to impress others! Great job!

Hi Mirco! thank you for sharing this interesting topic about the new phones and our desire of changing to new models as soon as possible.
I bought my last phone five month ago and I'll keep it at least two years, more over my last one I kept it for more than two years.
I think that everybody use the phone only for text message and call somebody, so I don't understand the needs for changing the cell. every year.
My last phone I gave it to my small brother and he's very happy for my gift.
I hope that everybody that change phones will give the old one to somebody who needs it!

I agree that buying a brand new phone is a want and not a need but sometimes it is a necessity. After a couple of years after its release a phone normally becomes obsolete, like in the case of the iPhones. The most efficient way to save the environment is to use your phone until it becomes obsolete and then upgrade to the newest phone available so it will become obsolete in the longest amount of time.

I definitely agree that many are addicted to myself, which I am also guilty of. I usually change mine around 1 to 2 years, possibly 3 years. Changing phones is usually for "broken/cracked screen" or to be "up to date". I need to work on using my phone to the best of it's abilities until I need a new one. I do agree with the people above.
