Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or need?

A want is something that you desire, but is not necessary in your life. For example, the latest iphone is a want for many people, but it is not a need. Most of our technology now a days is a want because everyone else has it. A need is something that is necessary. For example, food and shelter is a need.

I think this is a great point. A lot of people  buy new products just to look "cool" with their friends. I can speak from experience. I had an iPhone 4 for majority of this year. I really wanted a new phone, but I didn't need it, it was just a want. My old iPhone called and texted, that's what I needed. I didn't need Siri or 3D touch. When something breaks down and stops working, thats when it becomes a need. My iPhone 4 broke down, which is why I needed a new phone. Wants may become needs, but only in situations where the existing item becomes broken.

Did you know that The average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. This is clearly geneated by peoples selfish  overuse of resourses. I think people should learn what terrible things they are doing to the earth so that way they can correct it

I don't think that people are being selfish, but rather are taking resources for granted. People should indeed learn more about what they are doing to the environment, but I think that the issue that you are mentioning is a problem with the mindsets of people, especially people in 1st world countries, like the US, where resources are not a problem currently. Like the article you posted states, people only recycle a small portion of what can be recycled. If they do recycle the 75% percent, the pollution would go down, as less of the reusable resources are ending up in landfills, oceans, and other areas: resources would also be spared.

I agree. Great points and examples to help people understand what you mean. Excellent way to briefly get your point across about what a want and a need is. I think wants aren't as important to life as needs are.

Yes i think that parents need to stop giving kids everything they want and make them work for it if they want it.

Nice answer including the use of the definition of what a want is.
