The short answer to this question is that technology is primarily a want. Referencing Maslow's hierarchy of needs, technology does not appear anywhere. Also, from a strictly biological point of view, we will not die if we can't check Twitter for a week.

However, looking at the this question a little bit more deeply, I think we can realize that some technology is absolutely necessary in modern society. Now that is not to say that the latest and greatest technology is integral to the average person's survival, because it most certainly is not, but baseline technology is very important to success in the modern world in my opinion. One of the best examples that I can think of at the moment would be the college application process. This process is hard enough as it is, and makes it difficult for those with little resources and guidance to form a solid application, let alone one at all. Imagine trying to apply to college if you do not have access to a computer. It seem s impossible to me. I think that in life, there are many situations where there is a minimum level of technology necessary to live successfully.
