Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Too much want becomes a need
In the United States, technology in its early, yet advanced, stages have become wants, wants to further science, engineering, military, and many of other concepts in this country. However, technology has swept most of this world because of this want to improve our lives in a quick and easy way, and according to the International Telecommunication Union in 2015, almost half of the world has Internet connection. Even on a regular day, I see 9 people out of 10 using technology through their phones, laptops, or camera. As this "want" grows and with the accessibility that people have to technology, this want has become a need. People are so dependent of technology that in many cases, it is impossible to work, live, and socialize without technology in this modern world. As new technologies are being innovated, the want and need for technology increases, and we need technology just to write posts on this discussion board. I usually do not get the latest technology because usually, I am fine with what I have; it works and I am happy. Now, nothing is bad with a need for te chnology, but if there is severe dependence or a corruption of technology, then technology has become a problem, which in some cases, already has.
How interesting! We both came up with similar ideas on technology in today's world. I agree that technology which started from a want has not progressed to a need. It is hard to function with out the use of technology because that is how people communicate and work these days. Our own school is a prime example. Our homework and assignments are all posted online and we submit assignments through technology.
Hi Logan, thank you for bringing up this issue about technology. I agree that the world has become very dependent on technology to the point that we cannot go anywhere without our cellphones or other electronic devices. I believe that the world should strive to use technology in moderation because it does have some benefits such as lessening the consumption of trees in order to make paper. To balance our usage, we could limit the number of hours or even minutes (small steps) that we use our devices. What are some other ways in which people could balance their use of technology?
