Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Nothing in Excess, Everything in Moderation
Technology has helped reduced negative environmental impacts in some ways. A big one is paper consumption. Tons and tons of paper have been saved by ebooks, online documents, emails, and much more. From 2000 to 2004, Bank of America decreased their paper usage by 32% in part due to using technology more rather than printing things out.
Technology has helped and benefitted humans in countless ways -- ways that have saved lives and made the world a better place to live in. It that sense, it may be considered a need. However, there comes a point where there is just an excess in technology. A new cell phone every year isn't necessary, especially if your old one still works perfectly fine. Using technology in moderation may help reduce negative environmental impacts, but an excess of technology will just add to the problem.
I agree that everything in excess can be fatal, in this case, for our planet. The excess waste that we as humans are causing will someday catch up to us and we will finally realize that our addiction to waste making is ruining our planet.
I agree. It does decrease deforestation rates and is more convenient and portable. However, with the creation of these devices, we must take into account the negative outcomes, for example, the materials needed to produce it, the packaging is very difficult to recycle and when charging it and or plugging it you are increasing your technology carbon footprint.
I totally agree. I know I love my technology but I never really thought about how using it could help the environment!
I agree that moderation must be considered when talking about things such as technology and clothes. Technology is very useful in many ways. It provides easier communication and other online methods that save paper and similar useful resources. However, as Aisha J stated, we must also consider the negative effects of technology. Technology uses energy. Devices such as computers and cars all use energy that releases carbon dioxide. The increase of carbon dioxide through the usage of technology leads to global warming as heat is trapped
As you stated, technology ,such as phones, .help reduce environmental impacts. You also stated that everything is to be used in moderation. I agree with these statements. If everyone only uses their cell phone for basic methods of communication and not for new features, I think our carbon footprint would decrease.
In total, while technology reduces harmful environmental impact it also poses as a threat to carbon footprints. With s o many people buying new phones as a want, I think the negative effects are beginning to outweigh the positive.
