Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Necessary actions
Multiple activities realized by human beings add up to the carbon footprint. What actions do you classify as necessary even though they add up to the carbon footprint?
Something I think could be done to reduce humans carbon footprint would be reducing the consumption of meats, even though many depend on it for protein and living on a vegan or vegetarian diet is more expensive and possibly less accessible for many, especially in countries like Guatemala, where I live, I think it is a change that would bring great benefits globally and personally as it would reduce the emission of methane released by cows and other mammals which are one of the biggest contributors to world pollution. I don't think there is anything that must stay the same or as you say is "necessary", as transportation could be reduced by using bikes or carpooling, meat consumption could be reduced, burning fossil fuels could be changed to renewable energy sources.
