Consumerism

julietruong

In today's society there is always an advancement in almost any kind of product or innovation. We deem these updates as greatness and shows that our nation is constantly gaining knowledge. As we know, America had its great consumption period during the 1920's, but has that mindset of wanting the latest edition still ingrained into our heads? The Market Realist provides a short article about how consumerism continues to grow throughout each decade. It also states that consumption is good for the economy in the long run. (http://marketrealist.com/2013/09/u-s-co … ed-design/). Though consumerism aids our economy, it constantly hurts our environment in the long run as well. The fossil fuels emitted from the factories creating thousands of new products and gadgets damage our air quality. It also increases the amount of greenhouse gases that are in the air resulting in deeper threat of global warming. In general, I believe our society wants more than what we actually need and if we can cut back on the things we do not need, we can help our environment.
