Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Many times people have to have the latest technology. For example, when you buy the newest version of a cell phone every year you create waste from old cell phones you no longer have a use for. If a cell phone or other electronic device is thrown away it will end up in a landfill and release harmful toxins that could end up in the groundwater. It is important to ask yourself if you really need an item or if it is just a want. Think about how your choices will affect the environment. Check out this website:

Gabrielle,
I totally agree: e-waste is one of the biggest very ecological crises and social justice issues that we face not only in the United States, but across the globe. Those who deal with the collection and incineration of our electronics work in horrible health conditions, for some of the most common toxins found in electronics include mercury (which can cause kidney and brain damage), lead (which can harm the nervous and reproductive systems), and beryllium (which is a human carcinogen). As a society, we must work to protect this labor force and establish occupational laws.

Agreed. e-waste has come up as one of the biggest problems in America now. Electronic recycling is a solution that can help fix the problems e-waste has caused. An electronic recycling center may be closer to you than you think, and the ones who may need to go to an electronic recycling center may not even know it exists. For example, techies who get the new iPhone every time it comes out in September should be aware about the electronic recycling centers that are set up in areas around them. They can throw their old iPhones that they don't need anymore in one of the recycling centers. It is an easy solution to a problem that is hurting the Earth greatly.
